Ladybank Primary

Yesterday I was at Ladybank Primary School in Fife - a lovely small village school in the middle of great Scottish countryside.

I met around 50 young people from aged 9-11 and we spent the day being entrepreneurs - start with £25 enterprise money - make some products - sell them (for a profit)
Doesn't really seem like rocket science does it....

Problems occur of course when we have quality control / teamwork/costing/fussy buyers and other work colleagues with attitude to contend with  - aaagh the challenge of business.

The youngsters got stuck into the tasks - we had fun - all made a profit.

The got an insight into themselves their preferred job role and a look at other peoples skills too - they used our new assesment tool for reflective learning.

All in all a good day..........

Airdrie Morning

Just been to my bank in Airdrie ( actually it is partly my bank as it is the only independant bank in the UK and owned by customers and i have been a customer for over ten years)

Anyway behind me in the line were two young boys reaking of alcohol (11.30am) and there language was flowery &£#%<€¥+* to say the least.

I learned that they had been drinking till 6am then slept on someones floor - Getting up,going for a haircut and now getting what was left in thier bank accounts (£23) before starting the party again.

One of the boys tapped me on the shoulder
"Mate" "it's his birthday" pointing at his pal "He's 21 today"
"congratulations i say"

"You that guy who came to my school and spoke about "attitude"
Yes i said nervously "how you doing now, achieved your goals?

I'm doing alright -- no working the noo but my uncle is going to get me into that pure mad gas board -- maybe an apprentice

Go for it i say ... What else could i ... Oh and aim high - think

And work and set standards for self and the drink thats another story...

They say we have done enterprise in Scotland

Positive Stories

As Written by Young man 16/17

There is a young person with a great attitude, Someone Ambitious and going for it.

This is their story.......

A young boy who had not much financial funds when he was young. However one day he bought a van and some items. Buying and selling for a few months out of the back of the van in the estate. He began to make a good profit. He studied the stock exchange and invested some of his money into the markets. Continuing to make profits, he started his own electronics business - His employees designed and invented goods to sell in the big world.

One day he struck luck and his inventors designed one of the first computers - this was going to make him big bucks. The computer industry was booming and his Amstrad business was growing fast by the second.

The man is now a billionaire, living the life of a successful entrepreneur and appearing on his own Apprentice TV show. He was Knighted then became a Lord and has many great achievements.

This young man first of all had great Attitude is Ambitious and now is the most well known British entrepreneur.

This is the life of Lord Alan Sugar.

Just shows Positive Go for it Attitudes work........

Positive Stories

Recently in my "attitude matters" workshop I have been challenging young people to write a short story - it could be fiction or it can be about themselves with names changed if desired......

The headline I give then is

"There is a young person with a great positive attitude- someone ambitious and  going for it"....This is their story......

I know what a vague title and what would a young person 16 or 17 write? Well I have been astonished by the response

Here is one....

Mary lived in a scheme. No opportunities, no ambitions, no faith. Mary was always quiet, kept herself to herself and never got involved with the crowd. For this she would receive abuse from others and this caused her not to try too much in school.
She spent most of her time at her Gran and Papa's listening to her Papa's stories of when he was young.
One day Mary's Papa found he had taken ill and the next few weeks were spent listening to her Papa talking of how he wishes he had had the opportunity Mary has, to receive an education.
Mary's Papa passed and his last wish was for Mary to achieve something, to make the most of her opportunities, be successful and be happy.
Mary was now more ambitious than ever, she gave everything - 110% - and passed all her exams at the highest levels and went to University.Mary did this despite being told by the crowd "your a nobody" "you'll never amount to anything"
She passed all her uni exams and now Mary is a Professor of Law and is on top of her game.

She worked hard to get where she is and is now a successful person

So many things I could say about this story - however I have another 400 to read - I will keep updating more

As always - Go for it .... Matt

Entrepreneur Gets Positive

I have been reading over the weekend about Lord Harris the Chairman and entrepreneur behind Carpetright and his determination to make a difference in the lives of young people... as well as being a successful businessman Lord Harris is the sponsor of 13 school academies around London through the Harris Federation  he believes that a good education is the best start you can give a young child - and he is supporting these schools financially and with his time.

I wanted though the draw you attention to two photograghs taken in Tottenham - one of Lord Harris's store prior to the riots and one of the store after the riots

The store had 26 Flats above it - owned by a local housing corporation - they are now burnt out and wrecked -the tenants are being rehoused - Lord Harris has stated he will support the affected people with monies to get them through these tough times Telegragh Article

People often ask me why we are encouraging entrepreneurship - is it about me/me/me and I continually say "being entrepreneurial, having ideas, getting ambitious, taking action allows individuals to contribute and make a difference"

Though he probably won't need or accept it - Thank you Lord Harris

I am interested in what you would do if your store was burnt down or another personal challenge was presented to you - give up or rebuild ?
